Help Caryn Coin's fight against Leukemia & Lymphoma!
Welcome to my website! You're on this webpage because I need your help! I'm at it again and this time I've created a website to help me with my latest challenge – ANOTHER MARATHON FOR CHARITY! Well to be honest having already run The San Francisco Marathon in July of 2001 I have decided that my body cannot handle the impact of such a great distance due to a herniated disc in my back, missing toenails and blisters so big the pedicurist won’t even come near me. So this time around I’ve decided to take it easy and challenge myself to run a HALF marathon (13.1 miles!) which I’ll be completing in the Rock-n-Roll San Diego Marathon and Half Marathon June 1st.
You might be asking yourself, “Why is Caryn doing this again after declaring that she’d never, ever, EVER hit the pavement again upon crossing the finish line of her last marathon?” Well, very recently my Aunt Jill and co-worker AJ completed the Disney ½ marathon in Orlando, FL and after hearing their excitement, elation and sense of accomplishment when they returned they have inspired me to get back out there. I have decided that I, too, wanted to experience these feelings once again! When I contemplated doing this again I asked a few friends nation-wide to train with me and do the event together in June. To my surprise my co-worker Whitney has decided to do it and will be with me every step of the way. Also, my best friend Megan, living in Denver, and my favorite ex-co-worker in California and reality TV show buddy, Melissa, will be training with their friends and meet me in San Diego!!!!!! To help us cross the finish line, we have all joined the great organization Team In Training (www.teamintraining.org) which I trained with for my first marathon. They will provide me with a 4-month training program with professional coaches, workout schedules and a team of great people so the training is a bit more bearable. In return, I am committed to raising a minimum of $3,400 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.leukemia-lymphoma.org), a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Currently Leukemia is the number one killer of children in America and I feel LLS is one of the greatest societies I could possibly help raise money for. By reaching my goal of $3,400, at least 76% of these funds will go directly to the cause, while anything raised above $3,400 will be contributed 100% to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. To help bring me closer to the cause, Team In Training introduced me to, and has chosen as my Honoree Patient, Bill Rothenbach, a disease survivor as well as the son of a survivor. Bill was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in July of 1990. He underwent chemotherapy for 7 months and about a year after that had his spleen removed. He has been considered disease-free ever since. Unfortunately, in April of 1992 his father was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and after undergoing chemo 4 times he is currently in remission. It makes me realize that my upcoming challenge is nothing compared to what Bill and his father have endured. I’m inspired to be running in Bill’s honor this June and hope to smile the entire 13.1 miles. In a letter Bill has given to all of his sponsors he includes a very moving quote that I will hold dear throughout training and be reminded why I am putting myself to such a physical and fundraising challenge. “I shall pass through this world but once; any good thing, therefore, I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” Note: if there are people close to you affected by blood-related cancers, please let me know as I would love to run in their honor as well – I can use all the inspiration I can get! It would mean a lot to Bill, his father, millions of beneficiaries of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and me if you could complete the sponsorship form on the following page and mail with your gift (which is 100% tax deductible) to my home address by March 14th. Of course, I’ll gladly accept donations after this date (no later than May 16th which is the final day donations can be accepted); however the sooner I reach my fundraising goal, the better I can focus my energy on preparing for the 1/2 marathon. Be sure to check if your company offers any matching programs for charitable donations – you could double your money. I also encourage you to pass on a copy of this letter to anyone else who might be interested in helping this cause. Thank you in advance for your moral and/or financial support. With your support and that of Team In Training I’m confident I will succeed in completing this ½ marathon while raising money for a great cause. |
